Copeland island is part of a formation of three islands off the Down coast, Lighthouse Island, Copeland Island and Mews Island. They are now owned by the Northern Ireland National Trust. There is evidence of an early Viking settlement. Until the 20th century the islands were used by smugglers of tobacco and spirits. In 1920 Lighthouse Island had a population of 100. The islands are now uninhabited but are important breeding grounds for a variety of sea birds.
