Omey, west of Clifden, is accessible at low tide by car or on foot. A monastery and settlement was founded by Féichín in the 6th century. It was reported that the saint encountered violent opposition from the inhabitants when building a monastery there as it was the last spot in which paganism lingered in Ireland. Nearly 400 people lived on the island in 1841, in 1988 there were just three households left. The last full-time inhabitant was the former stuntman and wrestler Pascal Whelan, who died in 2017
